Biography:
A friendly, fun-loving goofball, Joey's youthful appearance and boyish personality belie his actual power and experience. This is just one of many contradictions that hover about him- Joey's generally easy going and amicable, but if a psychologist actually sat down with him, they'd most likely tag him as slightly paranoid and a borderline sociopath (he always seems to be armed, having at least one gun on him at all times). Despite being in his early to mid 20s, he's senior manager of the Atlanta branch of Hyperspeed Auto, a national auto repair and mod shop chain. And even more confusing is why he even needs a job- he appears to be independently wealthy, living on an estate (with the weird Frenchman and fellow mage Pierre residing in his poolhouse) and owning an extensive car collection.
His fellow mages who've interacted with him at the various social functions over the years have always been amused by what they initially assume are just jokingly boastful rantings. He's claimed at different times to have been a reformed car-thief and ex-wheelman for the Mob, or an ex-special forces assassin turned private military contractor. And he has countless tales of all the various places he's been around the world. Given the cheshire grin always on his face and his flippant attitude, his audience thinks he's just joking around and using his imagination to spin a fun yarn, and Joey admits as much. “Okay, not really,” he'll say, before flashing them a wry grin. After all, he's far too young to have done all of what he says. But he seems to legitimately know all the places he's talked about, and does have an incredibly extensive skill set. He's a qualified paramedic, appears to be able to drive or fly anything, and is a top notch mechanic. He also appears to have significant military experience- Joey's definitely had training in demolitions, unarmed combat, and all manner of firearms.
Despite the mysterious questions surrounding his past, Joey seems to be a nice a enough guy, so no one presses him on it. The surest thing they can tell about him is that the only thing he loves as much as cars are guns. Of his car collection, his pride and joy is his highly tuned '67 Ford Shelby Cobra GT500. Of his guns is his custom HK-417 assault rifle that a few people have claimed he calls his “Sweet Susie”. They even say he talks to “her” as if the weapon had an awakened spirit, although as far as anyone can tell he has no ability in the Spirit arcana.
Piquing their curiosity even more is the fact that he's one of the most powerful mages in the Atlanta guild. Joey is extremely skilled in both the Forces and Life arcanas, focusing on increasing his physical abilities to the peak human limit and harnessing the destructive energies of Forces (favoring fire and telekinesis in particular). If he's not actively masking his aura, the number of active spells Joey has up can be almost blinding. He always has several defensive and enhancement spells on him. Combined with his combat skills, he is an extremely dangerous opponent. As such, he is one of the go to guys whenever an extreme threat emerges against the Mage guild. There are even (unproven) rumors that he's occasionally helped the Invictus bring down rogue covens- Joey seems to have had extensive dealings with Scott Kavanaugh and Persephone Halifax and they appear to be on friendly terms. In any case, when the hammer needs to be brought down against enemies of the Guild, and destroying the threat is more important than trying to be subtle, they call Joey. He tends to err on the side of excessive force, so Darius tends to not ask too many questions, just hoping Joey gets the job done without too much publicity and collateral damage.
Besides Pierre, Joey's closest other friend in the guild is the gorgeous red-headed lawyer, Catherine Rourke, whom he often refers to as “Rin”. The three (along with a fourth, Patrick Kennedy, who has since left Atlanta) actually joined the guild at the same time, having accidentally caused a bit of tension between the vampires and mages of Atlanta. A local Columbian gang serving the interests of the vampire harpy known as Catalina had beef with a friend of Joey's, Luther Freeman, and when they went after Luther's family, Joey struck back. The violence escalated, with the Columbians trying to burn down Joey's shop and almost killing his niece, Maggie. This culminated in a shootout at the The Cathedral, with Joey slaughtering Catalina's ghouls and capturing the harpy.
Since the group did not initially realize the Columbians were serving vampires nor were they aware of the existence of the Guild, they did not realize the trouble they were causing. Luckily, Scott and Persephone smoothed things over with the Atlanta Invictus, and Darius approached the group and offered them membership for their own protection and to prevent an all out war from breaking out between the vampires and mages. Since then, they have been counted amongst the Guild's most valuable members.
Joey is also close friends with Heidi Fleischmann, sister of Catherine's lupine husband, Sebastian Krause. Joey has apparently had an on-again/off-again relationship with the German beauty for years. Their latest go at it (after, if the rumors are to be believed, she recovered from some sort of life threatening illness that required the intervention of both Darius and Sam to heal her) lasted a little over a year before they split up again. It wasn't too surprising for many, as while the two seemed to have a lot of fun together, others just didn't see them as a couple. This breakup was more amicable compared to their last two “breakups”, and the two have remained friendly.
