Session 23: Storming the Giant's Castle

[ Session 22 ] [ Back ] [ Session 24 ]

After speaking with the wisewomen of the northmen, we packed up a bunch of provisions and headed out. Another joined us, named Ashe, to assist.

It took us several days Mammoth-back to reach the wall that denoted the border into the Frost Giant kingdom. Initial signs showed that the place was deserted. Lumps in the snow, covered for ages seemingly, littered the ground everywhere.

We snuck up to the wall. No noise, movement. It appeared to be covered with years worth of ice. After studying it for some time we decided to just go ahead and melt the ice off. Took a few hours to get the ice off, but it was done without incident. With the mammoths and all of us, the doors were eventually pushed open.

Deserted.

We trekked through and pushed the doors all the way open and propped them. We headed down through the valley between the two glacier-mountains. At the end was a stairway heading up to a pair of doors leading into the mountains.

Inside, deserted again. A long hallway with a blue light at the end. We proceeded. Found some secret doors along the way. But they had stairs inside heading up toward an upper level where some light was shining through from the outside. Snow was blowing in. We decided to leave this avenue for later; the blue light was of more interest right now.

We headed back down and into the chamber. Inside was a huge statue on a raised dias depicting the god Thrym slaying the god Tempus. Tempus had some kind of magical blood flowing out of him onto the ground and pooling around him.

And…. we were attacked by giant frost spiders.

There were about 10 of them. We clumped up in the doorway, Kethys put a fog cloud down to bottleneck the enemies. We were able to dispatch the spiders one after another without too much trouble.

Once the enemies were cleared we took another peek-see. Four dishes along the walls bled a blue light. We determined they contained extremely valuable deep-freeze magical ice. We were interested in taking it. But still, we had to find the tomb of the giant king. We would come back for this once our mission was complete.

Onward and upward.
