Session 46: The Dracolisk

[ Session 45 ] [ Back ] [ Session 47 ]

We returned to New Phlan to turn in our mission, get paid, and restock on everything ever. We sold a bunch of stuff, things we didn't want after divving up the cool stuff. To Ohlo we sold the magical weapons we didn't need. He gave us a magical orb that he had invented for two way communication, and contained a pocket dimension.

We picked up the two Koval missions from the council, while Ohlo listened remotely, and then went back to confer with Ohlo about what he knew about the library.

He didn't know much, we were going in blind. Basically, a big creature was roaming the area, keeping the monster presence low. No one knew what it was, or if there were multiple.

Ohlo didn't know much about the head librarian, but suspected he was a spell caster of some sort. No one had seen him since the attack 50 yrs ago, and didn't know if he still lived, if he escaped or stayed, or sealed himself in the library. It was a mystery to everyone.

So we headed over to the well to use as our base of operations. We hung out while the druid scouted the area. His observations supported the rumors, but he couldn't really tell much more from what he saw than the little intel we had. We had to go in blind.

And so we did. The druid scouted forward while the rest of us hung back. He slowly made his way to the library with the rest of us trailing at a distance, and eventually we got to the wall of the courtyard surrounding the main building. The druid went over, and began scouting but then got jumped by a big thing.

After the dust settled, it appeared to be a…. he started turning to stone. But this was bigger than what Caed knew a basilisk to be. It had some aspects that seemed basilisk-like, and some aspects that seemed draconic. It seemed like a hybrid of the two.

Either way, we couldn't really look at it directly, which made it REALLY hard to fight. I tried repeatedly to a-fear it with the Master Control Rod, but it just wouldn't work. In the end, Logru did most of the damage to it, and we eventually got it down before anyone was turned to stone.

The druid passed out the goodberry smoothies afterwards to patch us, and we made our way closer to the building.

We discovered what appeared to be a statue, but after some inspection by Caed, it was determined to be a person the basilisk had turned to stone. Thilius used his Paladin magic to restore him to flesh, albeit dead flesh, in order for us to rifle through his things and figure out who he was and why he was here, and if he had a key to the library.

We only found a sort of diary. Turns out it was the guy who had bred the draco-lisk to be a sort-of super awesome, loyal, guard-dog. He'd brought it here to research some stuff in the library about dragon-basilisk breeding, and apparently had an accident… looked at his 'pet' and got turned into stone.

We moved on, and headed up to the building to see if we could gain entrance finally.
