Entry 02: This Place Sucks, Who'd Want to Live Here?

[ Previous ] [ Back ] [ Next ]

We landed in Bagram base north of Kabul, and I convinced a private on the base to get us a vehicle from the motor pool. From there, we headed down to Kabul and acquired a merc escort.

It was a five day journey to our destination, a Buddha. Along the way several days in, we got stopped by an obvious ambush. Some teens with submachine guns demanded we surrender to them (giving them our weapons), and we basically told them howaboutnooooo. And from that, a melee quickly broke out. We were putting a pretty easy dent in them. I even managed to skewer a couple with my spear (I decided not to get the catboys out so as to not scare our escort too badly).

But not long after I skewered the second guy, I blacked out completely.

When I came to my senses, we had arrived at a village, and some weird dude was offering me some water. The boys were around for the most part, although I didn't see the carrot top, staring at me intently waiting for me to drink. There was also some other new dude with us that the boys seemed to trust. It was unnerving having everyone staring at me, so I took a drink of the water.

The weird people were saying nonsensical things at me over and over again, even before I drank: “On a hill, a sheep that had no wool saw horses” After drinking the water, I repeated the phrase at them, whatever it meant, and allowed them to lead me farther back in the cave. The boys shrugged and followed suit, drinking the water and repeating the phrase.

We dropped into a hole, and entered a cave lit by torches. They led us into an area with a large-ish opening, where to my dismay three (obvious) giants were working, carving the walls or something. As we tried to hurry through with our guides, one of the giants saw us and yelled out an alarm.

It looked like we were about to get into another fight, a little tougher one this time…
