Session 26: The Tomb of the Giant King

[ Session 25 ] [ Back ] [ Session 27 ]

We crossed the chasm in the western hallway with some planning and effort. After that, we had some bungly, trip-fally derping around on the spiral stairs heading down to the basement, but we all managed to make it safely more or less.

In the set of rooms, we found a poop pit. We peered down; something was moving around down there. We sent the druid to explore for some reason, and it turned out to be a white pudding. This thing was rather scary. Once we got everyone extricated from the hole, we found it destroyed weapons and armor, so our melee folks had problems.

I gave the thing some distance, but since our front line was having some misgivings, I decided to unload on it with everything I had. Over the course of a couple seconds, I dumped a ton of damage on it. A few firebolts later, it was dead, much to our front line's relief. I collected some pudding slime for Ohlo while the others explored the poop hole. We didn't really find anything, so we pressed on into the last room.

In there, we found some earth elementals bound to a giant-sized forge. Before combat was engaged, our Paladin initiated a parlay. This gave the earth elementals pause. What followed was a rather civil discussion about their situation and how to free them of it. We determined that once we put Mok back to bed the earth elemental would be free to resume their slumber and that they would be happy.

The earth elementals, for their part, gave us some info to a stash under the forge. It had a trap on it of course, but our sneak was able to extract the bag without problems. We thanked the elementals and promised we'd be able to set things right so they could return to sleep.

With the basement fully explored, we knew that the chamber that lay underneath the bed was probably the last place left in here. We had to get into it. So we pondered what we could do to get into it.

We'd found a lot of lengths of chain with some padlocks in the basement and we thought we could connect the chains to pull the door open. We made a big effort of gathering them up and dragging them across the chasm back to where the room was. After connecting them up and adding the meathook from the kitchen to attach it to the ring on the bed, we heaved the large stone up.

Nothing came out. No sounds. We descended into the blackness. As we arrived at the bottom, we found what appeared to be the remains of those warriors from the northmen party reanimated and attacking us, as wights. One, probably rognvald, was wielding the magic blade, Thorgrim.

Oh, this was a tough fight. I was largely out of spells. Luckily, our Paladin turned a few of them to get them out of the fight. Unfortunately, we were focusing on the big guy instead of the peons, so we had a lot of trouble and several of us almost died, but we managed to get them down. Logru seemed super excited to pick up the big magical sword from the grip of the defeated Rognvald.

One last chamber, up the stairs. We came to the top and saw a throne with the corpse of Mok sitting on it, and his great axe laying askew at his feet. We searched around his room; didn't seem to contain any further enemies to fight. So we set the axe back into his grip and then pondered whether or not we would loot the chest behind his throne.

While the others spent time examining the situation, I came to the decision that I wanted to attempt to loot it. If no one else was with me, then I would send everyone out and I make my attempt solo so no one else would be caught in any reprocussions that might occur.
