Session 29: An Angel and a Demon
[ Session 28 ] [ Back ] [ Session 30 ]
This dude was either some kind of demon in disguise or some kind of angel. For some reason, we decided to humor him and his trials. I kind of trusted him, but I was suspicious.
We waited around forever while Caed handled the first trial. Seems like it took a day or more. Finally they emerged. Apparently, Caed had failed his Trial of Patience. By being TOO patient??? Suspicious. My wariness grew.
Kethys was up next, with the Trial of Piety. This one didn't last nearly so long. He was in and out in a few minutes. Passed, apparently, by refusing the request made of Seridan. Hmm… again suspicious.
Next was Thilius, the Test of Honor. Heard from the tunnel the clanking of weapons. Oh gods, that can't be good. Then it got quiet again. A few minutes later, Thilius emerged, shoulders hunched. Nottttt a good sign. He had failed.
I peered at Seridan with veiled suspicions. My turn. Down a tunnel he lead me. At the end, a black orb of energy hovered. A sphere of annihilation? He told me if I were to cast my most powerful magical item into it, it would be destroyed, and he would come to aid me at a single time of my choosing, that it could be the choice between life and death.
The Star Stone was the most powerful magical item on me. But it was one of the three keys to Denlorn's tower. And maybe other things. I couldn't cast it in, it was the heritage of all Phlan, even though I carried it.
I told him no. He came back and me and told me that wasn't our party's most powerful magical item. The implication was Thorgrim. fat chance of that! I'd have to pry it out of Logru's cold, dead hands. Assuming I could kill him. Perhaps I could… but, no.
I refused Seridan again. Ne nodded and accepted my answer. Apparently a passing grade.
Back out in the main cave, we discovered that 50% was a minimum passing grade. How embarrassing for us. But good enough, I guess.
Those of us good aligned folk headed back in to the well area with Seridan and were given 5 waterskins of well water. It had many awesome properties, only one of which was some awesome healing. We were also given 5 pearls from oysters at the bottom of the well. Enlightenment boost! We headed back into the main cave to hand things out.
After consuming my own pearl, I felt a surge of energy, enlightenment. I felt ready and raring to go! Time to go slay a demon! Lets get out of here and free Ravenglass!
Once everyone was good to go, we headed into Ravenglass, ready to get cracking.
Thilius was forward and came across a kid in the center of town. Clearly, the being we were looking for. They exchanged some words, and then the boy transformed into a monster, a demon.
The Thilius attacked and Caed ran up and attacked too. Both got grappled and taken into the air. He then summoned the four baddies that I saw appear at the lighthouse (but who left before engaging in that battle).
Not good, Revenants. One was sworn upon me, one on Kethys, and two on Logru. We set to it.
I banished my Revenant. And then I started counterspelling pretty much everything the Grythyx, the Glabrezu, did. This annoyed him greatly.
Kethys, meanwhile, burned Grythyx's actions by forcing him to spend actions Dispelling moonbeams. One by one his 3 minions were dispatched. And then we turned to him, with only a few more moments left on the Banishment. We hacked away at his shield, hitting, zapping, burning, and eventually his shield, broke, and the next hit, Logru cleaved in him half.
He dissipated. His hold on the city, the swirling ghost storm, evaporated before our eyes.
The last Revenant reappeared at the end of his Banishment and collapsed into a pile of dust.
I collected some samples from the 4 Revenants to take to Ohlo. We collected a valuable (non-magical) medallion, and the Revenant of Tal, the ship captain, was carrying a magical rapier. Caed seemed very interested in this, and no one seemed interested in contesting him over it (even Logru), so he picked it up, cleaned it off, and tested it out a little as the sun started peeking through the clouds above us.
