Craft Skill Modifications

Standard Book Rules:

  • Craft skill ranks must be purchased multiple times, each time with a specific focus (book lists “air”, “earth”, “fire”, “water”, “wood”).
  • Specializations can be purchased for extra dice, but are still limited by the 3-ranks-max per skill
  • If you don't have the right focus or specialization in a given situation, you can't roll it.
  • Criticism: This makes it way too expensive given how broad other skills are (Linguistics, Melee), completely unversatile, and totally undramatic for godlike beings.

House Rules:

  • The Craft skill generically covers all mundane crafting and need only be purchased once
  • Craft charms only need be purchased once
  • To do any kind of supernatural crafting requires a relevant specialization be purchased
  • No more max of 3 on Craft specializations, but no specialization can be above 3
  • Suggested Specializations for Supernatural Crafting: Jade, Orichalcum, Starmetal, Moonsilver, Soulsteel, Magitech
  • Magitech is needed for any Artifact that isn't solely made of one of the magical materials or for Artifacts that requires spells woven into them

Jewel of the Master's Hand (Craft) Hearthstone: Oadenol's Codex, p90

  • Book: +4 Craft(earth), +2 Craft(other element), +1 Craft(other)
  • Houserule: +4 Craft(mundane), +3 Craft(jade), +2 Craft(other magical material), +1 Craft(other/anything else)

General Mundane Item Creation

Fine Quality Item: 3-4 Threshold successes on item creation roll
Exceptional Quality Item: 5+ Threshold successes on item creation roll, bumps the resource (sale) cost of the item by 1
Perfect Quality Item: Add +5 to the Difficulty and Creation Time of the “average” version of that item

Create Hand-held Mundane Item

This is for creating small, hand-held mundane items.

Die Pool: (Lowest of DEX/PER/INT) + Craft + Appropriate Specialization + Equipment Bonuses + Enhancement Bonuses (hearthstones, etc)
Difficulty: Resources value of the item (e.g., the target number of successes)
Time: days equal to the resources value of the item

Create Large Mundane Item

This is for creating complex or large mundane items such as hand-forged items, buildings, ships, etc.

Die Pool: (Lowest of PER/INT) + Craft + Appropriate Specialization + Equipment Bonuses + Enhancement Bonuses (hearthstones, etc)
Difficulty: Resources value of the item (e.g., the target number of successes)
Time (hand-forged item): weeks equal to the resources value of the item
Time (buildings, etc): months or years equal to the resources value of the item depending on the nature of the item

Create Artifact

Exalted p133-134 and p380, Oadenol's Codex p19

Die Pool: INT + Craft + Appropriate Specialization (???) + Equipment Bonuses + Enhancement Bonuses (hearthstones, etc)
Aids Bonus: (+ assistants successes), or (+1 per 5 mortal aids), or (+1 per 2 minor supernatural aids, non-exalts), or (+4 high-level supernatural aids)
Workshop Bonus/Penalty: -4 rudimentary (resources 0), -2 basic (resources 3), 0 master's (resources 4), +2 flawless (realm only has a few total, usually part of a manse), +4 ideal (impossible to find; they're all broke)
Time Interval: 1 season
Exotic Materials: See Oadenol's Codex p26-27. Collection of these materials can entail an adventure in and of themselves.

Jade Type: The correct jade type must be used for an enhancement item (e.g., blue jade must be used for stealth items)
Jade Cost: 1 lb = resources 3, 9 lbs = resources 4, 25 lbs = resources 5

Repair Artifact

Oadenol's Codex, p30

Functional, Damaged Artifacts:

  • Pool: Same as Create Artifact
  • Difficulty: Artifact's rating +1
  • Success: Each success repairs one level of damage
  • Time Interval: Small items are days per roll, large items are months per roll



Non-Functional, Damaged Artifacts:

  • Repairing such an item is the same as creating an Artifact 1 dot lower in rank (needs new exotic materials, etc). See Create Artifact.

Breaking a Hearthstone

Exalted, p384

Requirements: Occult 3 and Craft(Spec: Air) 3
Die Pool: PER + Craft + Specialization(?) + Jewel of the Master's Hand Hearthstone (other) 1 (see above for hearthstone houserule)
Difficulty: 1
Time: Book only specifies that it cannot be done in combat. Ergo, minutes.
Botch: Releases wild magical effects similar to the results of a high-circle countermagic spell
