West, Northwest of the City of Alestia, and nearly due east of Shessilport, lay the several hundred square miles of the Samprin Hills. The hills comprise a desolate region where the Regilith Mountains give way to the Shesslian Valley, and the borders of Shesslia, Alestia, and Upper Thalia meet. These low, rolling, and boulder-strewn hills mark the site of many battles. The terrain gave tremendous advantage to the defender, who could fortify every small rise and and escarpment. Many of the massive boulders serve as impromptu headstones for soldiers of many races and allegiances.
Today, large armies avoid the Samprin Hills. While the promise of access into the Alestian, Shesslian or Thalian heartlands may seem tempting (bypassing the defenses at Tor in the Shesslian forests or the fortress at Penfall on the Alestian/Thalian frontier), not a single army has passed through its rocks unscathed in nearly 400 years. Today, civilized folk avoid the hills, and many fear to cross into the hills.
Hearty nomadic farmers and insular villagers are the primary inhabitants. The denizens pay tribute to no sovereign, but no power has sought to assert definitive control over the effectively lawless region.
