Biography:
Born into a life of wealth and privilege, JC grew up to become a bored, rich playboy, living a life of luxury off his trust fund and a modest investment portfolio. Having a silver spoon in his mouth since birth, he's used to getting his way through money and influence. Since his awakening, the opening of the human mind to him has only expanded his repertoire of tricks he uses to get what he wants.
Despite his rich upbringing, JC had a troubled home life, causing him to act out as a teen. His father was Miles “Hang 'Em” Mitchell, an Atlanta judge known for being particularly hard on sex offenders. While Miles seemed to be a paragon of honor and virtue to the public eye, a hero to honest, decent Americans, the sad truth was that he was a hypocrite, a hedonistic and abusive bastard who was projecting on to the very offenders who came into his courtroom. He screwed around on his wife, and beat JC whenever he screwed up and embarrassed him. JC suspected his father even turned his lecherous ways on JC's sister Summer, but if he did, Summer sure wasn't saying anything. But JC thought the fact that his sister ran away and never came back was particularly telling. With a family situation like this, JC's mother was driven to drink until she was nothing more than a zombie who stood idly by and let her husband abuse his children.
With a father figure like that, JC spent his youth drunkenly partying and screwing around, his family's wealth bailing him out of trouble. Not that his dad wouldn't make him pay for his mischief. But JC couldn't respect his father's discipline, when Miles behaved exactly the same way. For a while, there seemed like there might be hope for JC. He had fallen for a fellow classmate named Lisa Castelli. At first, she was just another girl he was trying to screw. But she held out against his charms, and as he got to know her he actually grew fond of her, and she started to change him. It soon turned into a tug of war between his old ways and her, and she seemed to be winning.
But it was not to be. After a momentary freak out that he would become his father and would take her down with him, he tried pushing Lisa away by cheating on her with an ex-girlfriend. JC realized what a jack-ass he was being and tried to win her back, but after their breakup, Lisa disappeared, eventually found raped and murdered. And somehow, he was the suspect! Miles managed to get him off, but Lisa's father, a cop, kidnapped JC and tried to get him to confess at gunpoint. JC managed to wrestle the gun from him and ended up accidentally killing him in self defense.
Eventually, a young homicide detective, Elly Rush, made a break in the case and discovered it had been Miles who raped and killed Lisa. But Miles had money and contacts and years of law experience, so he was able to beat the rap. JC was ready to kill his dad himself, but Lisa's mom beat him to it, murdering Miles on the courthouse steps after his victory.
After all this, JC fell back into his old behavior and continued it into adulthood, though he has somehow managed to mature somewhat and tone it back a little. He still comes off as an arrogant jerk though.
JC was brought into the Mage guild by his mentor, Claude Raines. JC met him right around the time of his awakening. Claude, an investigator for the guild, had been looking into a rising star amongst the Invictus. This new vampire was a girl going by the name “Summer St. Claire”. Summer was the new childe of Jeanette St. Claire, an influential Daeva within the Invictus' ranks, and the Mage guild suspected a dangerous political situation was brewing.
Claude happened upon Summer attacking JC. As it turns out, this Summer was JC's runaway sister. Through a bit of cleverness and manipulation, she had managed to get a hold of her entire trust when she left years before for parts unknown. She returned out of the blue, trying to use her newfound powers to try and get a hold of more of the family's money. JC awakened at that time, his powers subconsciously protecting him from Summer's. She attacked him in a rage, and he was only saved through Claude's intervention.
Claude saw JC had potential, and brought him into the Mage guild to protect him from Summer and her sire. The guild negotiated a truce with the Invictus and set things straight between the two siblings. Though they often run in the same social circles now, both being members of high society, their relationship is a tenuous one. They have a rivalry that Claude worries could spark into a conflict between the mages and the vampires, so he does his best to steer JC clear of any course of action that could lead down that path.
Under Claude's tutelage. JC's magical prowess has expanded greatly in a short amount of time, particularly in the area of Mind. Mundane minds have become an open book to JC, and he's focused a lot of effort in learning mind control. JC's progress has begun to trouble Claude though, and while he has tried to slow down the lessons, JC is proving to be a prodigy in this area. What worries Claude the most is JC's lack of respect for people's privacy and his seeming nonchalance in mentally pushing people into doing what he wants. Claude hasn't seen JC do anything worse than using his powers to get a free drink or peek into a young beauty's mind to give him an advantage in the flirting game. But Claude fears without proper guidance, JC will use his abilities for more nefarious ends.
JC has a reputation for being a bit of a lothario, having had dalliances with many women, including the flighty Rachel Townsend and the free-spirited, boy crazy Clover Caraway. He has a slight thing for fellow mage Shaliglig, who he's worked with on several occasions for the Mage Guild. Even though the girl loathes him, it is this very immunity to his charms that spurs him on. While JC's flirtatiousness extends even to Elly, and there is a bit of a mutual attraction there, the truth is that his feelings for her go beyond the physical. She was there for him during the investigation into Lisa's death and throughout his father's trial, when his own family was not. As such, he feels a sort of familial bond towards her, mostly seeing her as a caring older sister type.
