The Night Sky

The Moons: the Greater Powers

The night sky is dominated by the five moons, unchanging in their orbits, as frim beneath the feet of the denizens of Farne as the magic that flows through it. The red moon, Firis, borne of the essence of Frost and Fire, is the bringer of Eäróniel's Kiss and Esundor's Gaze. The dun colored Terris, was borne of the struggle between fertile soil, and desert wastes brings Arienwe's Bounty, and tortures the fields while Eäróniel rules. Oceanis, the blue-green moon, brings forth the terrible, but necessary torrents of Uelali's Embrace, and aid the folk again at harvest time. Zephris, the white moon, is the furthest away of the moons. Its effects, tempered by distance, are often underestimated or overlooked. Finally, Magis, the black moon, moon of magic, the giver and taker of life, orbits, changing the course of rivers and history, creating and destroying at the same time.

Each moon represents the conflict between two aspects of an element. The moons were created through the eternal turmoil of this conflict. The ebb and flow of the seasons, changes in the weather, good fortune, drought, famine… all of these exist in the moons of Farne.

Each moon is the home of terrible elemental powers that mortal minds can barely comprehend. While some chose to worship these powers, they ( with a handful of exceptions ) generally pay no heed, save when the course of the eternal struggle may be changed. The races of Farne have named these powers, and rightfully respect them. Firis is home to Eäróniel and Esundor. Drith and Arienwe call Terris home. The Storm Regent, Uelali and the Enduring King, Cephris constantly battle over Oceanis. Aisyndyr teases Danackes on Zephris. Magis orbits emptily, as its masters, Enanye and Keslaar choose often to interact with gods and mortals.

The Stars: the Gods and Goddesses

Walking with the Moons in the night sky are stars uncountable. Some stars walk alone in their trek through the heavens. Other stars have come to have meaning not in and of themselves, but in relation to their neighbors. These stars, the constellations, represent the gods. Created at the beginning of the current age, and the death of the previous age, these gods were mortal men and women, who through chance, luck, design, or fate, either had godhood thrust onto them, or fought tooth and nail for it. Each star in a god's constellation represents a seal of that dieties power. Occasionaly, stars will change constellations, usually with turbulent results below.

Of the stars that walk the night sky alone, there are many types. Some are the spirits of the dead who have decided to watch events unfold below them. A great many stars are spirits, beneficial and baneful, that inhabit the rocks, trees and streams. Others are the Gifted, powerful individuals touched by the elemental powers. Others, it is said, are portals to other places, both wonderful and terrible, that mortal minds fail to compehend.

Astral Bodies

Many other objects can be seen in the night sky, besides the moons and the stars. Occasionaly, a small meteor shower heralding any number of events can be seen by the watchful.

Two comets also can be seen, in the night sky. The first of which, a ball of smoking black ice with a seemingly eratic path, appeared in 1354 Post Rift, and is told to be an ill omen. Another, a purplish ball of dead ice orbits silently after having arrived in 2700 Post Rift.
