Hammerspace

Hammerspace is a combination of mortals obliviously overlooking the obvious, clever misdirection, and long trench-coats. It is semi-magical, and serves as a hand-waving element.

The rule of thumb is that if an item (or collection of items) can conceivably be hidden on or near a character, they can have it. Hammerspace will immediately fail if an item is being looked for (passively or not), or the the character is actively searched for anything suspicious. Hammerspace will not allow an item to spontaneous appear in a convenient location if it is otherwise unexplainable.

Examples

  • A sword or shotgun can be hidden in hammerspace while riding MARTA and not attract attention (assuming normal dress). A giant ax would require a long trench coat or something explicit to hide it. A 7-foot long spear cannot be hidden in hammerspace, and must be disguised to avoid attracting attention.
  • A giant battle ax can be hidden under a trench coat, but going through a metal detector (looking for something suspicious) or having somebody (mortal or no) explicitly on the lookout for a person with an ax (something explicit; the ax's outline can be discerned under the coat)
  • A character in a dress that leaves little to the imagination cannot draw a gun from hammerspace if the character was searched going into a closed room and no arrangement to have a gun hidden in the room a priori was made.
