Scion: Awakening -- Heroic Form

Overview

As opposed to traditional demigods who have had their divine ichor flowing through their veins since birth, the supernatural beings of this new World were “artificially” awakened by receiving donor ichor from their previous selves. As a result, the manifestation of their divinity causes a dramatic physical transformation to their bodies and trappings. In essence, they can willingly transform into their true selves and back into their mundane bodies.

Intention

There are a few ideas at work here:

  1. It's cool to have a “superhero” form you can turn into which is a hyper-idealized version of yourself, complete with whatever flavorful cosmetic effects and costume that might fit your idiom.
  2. This allows an additional dimension of gameplay that Scion traditionally lacks: the possibility of a secret identity. Since the heroes are not required to be full (or half) “orphans” they will be able to have family, friends, childhoods, and other normal circumstances as part of their backstory as well as ongoing plot elements.
  3. The bad guys will likely start hunting the player characters down. Having a “civilian guise” will potentially allow the protagonists the ability to avoid some level of notice if done carefully.
  4. Everyone gets to use miniatures which can look fantastical, or modern, or sci-fi, or any combination thereof without violating the spirit of the game.
  5. Lastly, if the good guys have it… then the bad guys probably have something like it too.

Mechanics

  • The PCs have a “heroic form” that they can consciously switch into. This form approximates their mundane bodies but with fantastical, over-idealized, and divinely-influenced elements. They can change their height, weight, body type, coloration, hairstyles, clothing, carried items, and so on into one fixed form as appropriate to their divine parent and overall character theme. This form can be dramatically different than their mundane bodies or be nearly identical depending upon the personality of the character, but the heroic form's clothing and items on their person will always be overtly epic in appearance. You're an demigod; your parent will make sure you properly represent your proud lineage.
  • Your heroic form will have whatever mundane items on it that you can conceivably carry, within the boundaries of reason. You can have pouches full of tools, food, gems, ammo, and whatever else your patron deity would conceivably grant you manifest, full and restocked, when you transform. If this is exploited in any way then your divine parent (read: the GM) will simply change your heroic attire to prevent future problems.
  • Magical relics will manifest in one of three ways, to be determined by the player on a per-item basis. This choice is permanent so you are encouraged to put thought into it.
    • Persistent: The relic will exist independent of the scion's form of the moment. Its form will not change nor will its functionality.
    • Linked: The relic has a mundane form and a supernatural form. The appearance of the object will change along with its owner's form (regardless of distance between them), but the magical properties of the object remain in effect regardless of its current appearance.
    • Summoned: The relic appears in the scion's possession only when the scion is in their heroic form and disappears from existence when the scion reverts back to mundane form. Its magical properties are accessible only when it its manifested.
  • Any nonliving mundane objects (of subjectively reasonable size) on the scion's person when they transform will cease to exist or persist through the transformation as appropriate. For example, your pocketed cellphone would go away when you enter demigod mode and not come back until you reassumed your mortal appearance. A carried office chair would remain in your arms regardless of your current form.
  • Wounds, injuries, toxins, pathogens, and any other biological effects persist between forms.
  • Your character sheet (stats, skills, abilities, powers, etc.) is unaffected by your form as your capabilities as a demigod remain the same no matter your appearance.
  • Transforming is a zero-tick action with the stipulation that it can't be done while within direct line of sight of a mortal human. Mirrors and cameras do not count as LOS: it's direct eyeball viewing that matters. Darkness, smoke, glare, arbitrarily sufficient occlusion, and other obscuring conditions prevent LOS. Transformation occurs so quickly that it can happen within the space of an eyeblink.
