Edge Rules

Using Edge

These are the various ways you can use Edge:

Push the Limit: (SR5, p56) Add your Edge Rating to your test, either before or after the roll. The roll ignores limit, and dice get the rule of 6 quality. If done before the roll EVERY die gets this quality. If done after, only the edge dice use the rule of 6.

Second Chance: (SR5, p56) Re-roll all dice that did not score a hit on the roll. Limit still applies, and the die do not get the rule of 6 quality.

Seize the Initiative: (SR5, p56) Immediately go to the top of the initiative order, regardless of your initiative score. If multiple characters do this, they go before all other characters, in the order of their initiative score. (In the case of ties, follow ERIC- Edge Rating, Reaction Rating, Intuition Rating, Coin Toss) This lasts for the entire combat turn, and does grant multiple initiative passes if the top of the initiative order is high enough. So, if you're Joe Average, facing cybered up samurai with super reflex enhancements, astral mages with increased reflexes and deckers in hot-sim mode, they can suddenly have an insanely high initiative, more than they'd normally be capable of. This effect lasts for a single combat turn.

Blitz: (SR5, p56) Roll the maximum of 5d6 initiative dice for a single combat turn.

Close Call: (SR5, p56) Negate the effects of one glitch or turn a critical glitch into a glitch.

Dead Man's Trigger: (SR5 p56) If you character is about to fall unconscious or die, spend an edge to roll a body + willpower (3) test. If successful, the character can spend any remaining actions they have on a single action phase before blacking out.

Lucky Move: (RaG, p126) Spend a point of edge to use a martial art technique they are not trained in. This can only been done once per combat turn.

Miracle Shot: (RaG, p126) Spend a point of edge to negate 4 points worth of called shot penalties for any called shot. This means the called shot action in SR5 incur no penalties, and the new called shots in RaG are lessened by 4 (to a minimum of 0). Note that his only negates the actual called shot penalties, not any other penalties the action may have.

Lucky Duck: (RaG, p126) Spend TWO edge points to warn a teammate of an impending attack. This is done on the teammate's action phase, but uses the character's edge points. This is used after an attack is declared on a teammate to make it automatically miss. Note that the character must be able to see the attack coming and have a way to warn their teammate (commlinks count).

Sixth Sense: (RaG, p126) Spend edge to be able to still roll a defense test even when caught unaware.

Lucky Cover: (RaG, p126) Spend edge to suddenly find a piece of cover with which to provide a cover bonus to a defense test, or to hide behind when coming under suppressive fire so as to not be forced to hit the ground.

Raising Edge

Edge is raised like any other attribute, at a cost of new rating x5.

Regaining Edge

Characters regain one point of edge after a fulfilling meal and a good night's rest (at least 8 hours). GMs can also award edge points for:

  • Good Roleplaying
  • Heroic Acts of Self Sacrifice
  • Achievement of important personal Goals
  • Enduring a Critical Glitch without using a Close Call Edge Action
  • Succeeding in an important objective
  • Being particularly brave or smart
  • Pushing the storyline forward
  • Having the right skills at the right place at the right time
  • Impressing the group with humor or drama

To be clear, this is to REFRESH your edge pool of any edge you spent.

Burning Edge

Edge can be spent PERMANENTLY in order to perform miracles to save your butt.

Smackdown: Permanently spend a point of edge in order to succeed an action with 4 net hits, limits do not apply. This has to be an action the character is capable of performing, for example, they cannot use it on a skill they do not possess and can't default.

Not Dead Yet: Permanently spend a point of edge to SURVIVE an effect that would render a character permanently dead immediately, i.e. would blow past their physical condition monitor and overflow rating in one felled swoop. Instead, they hang on to life, unable to act, but hopefully that will give someone a chance to stabilize them and provide healing.

Burnt Edge can be bought back up as normal.
