Enclosed on the east by tendrils of the Greenwood, and in the foothills of the Eastwall range to the west, the Free Republic of Vara continues to persist much as it did for the nearly three-hundred years following the Sundering. The eponymous city of Vara serves as the main fortress of the republic and major trading center. For centuries before the sundering, mineral wealth from the Eastwall and furs and lumber from the Greenwood flowed from the 12 cities that composed the Prefecture of Vara through the city enriching it greatly.

That wealth brought art, beauty and culture to the fringe. More importantly for those living in Vara today, it purchased the formidable Kaldian walls. Though the walls today protect just a fraction of the population of a few hundred years ago, they are the most visible and sturdy testament to past glories.

Today the signatory cities that comprise the republic band together for mutual defense, trading with each other amidst the ruins of their former glory.

The republic was formed when the Varan led coalition defeated Lord Albrecht Stern in the Battle of the Creeping Wood. Though beaten, Lord Stern fled and evaded capture. However, this coalition of independent states was brought to heel and incorporated against their will into the nascent republic.

Though military opposition has faded, many of the member cities of the republic have sizable garrisions to ensure their loyalty. Lord Stern is rumored to be building an army in the Greenwood to break the grip of the republic.
