Background

Jarlath was never known as a very exceptional child. He was not bright, he was not athletic, and he certainly was not memorable. In the rare event that he was the topic of conversation, words like “reliable” and “quiet” were used.

His father, Caius Ardin Eleutherius, was a modest blacksmith who also dabbled in jewelcraft. Marina Solana, Caius' wife and a passable cook, was betrothed to Jarlath's father in an apparently unremarkable prearrangement, just as both of their own parents had been. The Eleutherius clan had always participated in the tradition of arranged marriages; it was both a familial as well as a religious tradition passed down from before even the eldest of them could recall.

In truth, the bloodlines of Jarlath's ancestors had been carefully constructed for over 4500 years. An offshoot cult of Echnis, the spirit of technology, had laid a convoluted and intricate eugenics program that began in the Year of the Fulcrum when it became apparent that the power of technology had been eclipsed by the power of magic. Using impossibly complex statistical calculations and applying magically-integrated chaos theory (read: Fate magic), the cult's efforts not only assisted in the manifestation of Echnis but also insured that one day the spirit would have a mortal (re)incarnation if needed.

Jarlath is not the ultimate fruit of that endeavor; he is one generation removed from the culmination. Jarlath's essence has been constructed to house an unprecedented affinity for the four physical elements of Air, Fire, Earth, and Water (read: Matter and Forces). The missing ingredient, embodied by his predestined mate, comprises of a font of raw Magic (read: Prime and Fate) bred from both angelic and demonic bloodlines. By design, the offspring of Jarlath and that woman would be the perfect host for a god-become-flesh.

The identity of this woman is kept secret, just as Jarlath's was, and in fact great pains were made to insure that both of their lives were otherwise kept as bland as possible. In no way should they have ever experienced anything extraordinary, as such things tend to derail long-term schemes. The very individuals themselves, the ordained parents of a supernatural entity, were even mentally conditioned to exhibit very little personality of their own. After all, it would not be useful if the tools of destiny exercised very much free will.

When the slavers came to Traubin, Jarlath was old enough to understand what was happening, yet not old enough to fight back. His parents, on the other hand, fought back with surprising tenacity, and paid for their bravery with their lives. Realizing that he was powerless to make a difference and that his only hope of survival was to simply withstand the cruelty and hardship of the slavers, Jarlath grew into a man of incredible fortitude. He learned to endure, and in enduring, grow stronger.

Even more devastating to Jarlath's originally intended destiny, the secret members of the cult of Echnis assigned to watch over him ended up dying in a futile attempt to keep him from expressing his latent magical abilities. Now all that remains of that organization consists of a remote cell in an unknown village, tending to Jarlath's intended mate, and they do not have the resources to easily safeguard the female as well as track down Jarlath himself.

The cult do not even have a current physical description of the boy, and they certainly are unaware that his magical awakening turned his hair from black into gleaming silver. Additionally, to honor his rebirth as a free man (and/or mystic being) and as a constant personal reminder of his orphanhood, Jarlath dropped his given name entirely and now answers only to “Grey.”

Apparently there were a few ancient variables which were not properly taken into account.
